Although Azzurra marks restaurant vet Marty Fosse's (Anteprima, Acre, Bar Ombra) first foray outside the Andersonville area, Fosse says the menu, designed by himself and chef de cuisine Katie Kelly, isn't breaking new ground. "It's much harder to stay in the box than it is to get out of it," Fosse says. "We want to cook the same way an Italian grandmother would cook."
The decor of the 80-seat room is rooted in the same simplicity as the food. Designed by Michael Moorman (m.henry) and Fosse, the space is decorated with old Italian postcards that have been blown up and framed, vintage Victrola hats repurposed as light fixtures, and reclaimed furniture. Moorman and Fosse have spruced up the former Gunner's space with a bright red and yellow color scheme.
Fosse is excited to open the doors today at 5 p.m. and for brunch this weekend. "Wicker Park has lots of foot traffic and a tremendous energy level," he says. "We have an opportunity to meet the needs of the neighborhood." All of the pedestrians in the neighborhood have a new Italian spot to try starting today.
