Martin Kastner and his company Crucial Detail may not be a household name to many, but soon that will change. Kastner, best known in Chicago for his work designing custom serving pieces and vessels for Alinea, the Aviary and Next, launched a KickStarter campaign late in the day yesterday to raise funds to make his project, The Porthole, a reality. The Porthole, a clear window-like vessel that houses infused cocktails at the Aviary (originally the Blueberry cocktail), has gained such acclaim that Kastner worked on a way to bring it to the masses. Clearly, there was interest as the campaign was fully funded in two hours, and over $66,000 has been raised with 27 days to go.
For those looking to get in on the action, there are some great incentives to do so. Although some of the mid-level backing pledge opportunities are sold out, those willing to shell out $5,000 or more will have the opportunity to spend the day at the Aviary with Grant Achatz and Charles Joly, learn how to make cocktails in the kitchen, and enjoy cocktails with the chefs, in addition to receiving two signed Portholes from Kastner.
