And then there was one. Well, sort of. SmallBar, which first opened in Logan Square about eight years ago, eventually added two more locations, one on Division in Wicker Park a year later and the other on Fullerton in Lincoln Park. About a year ago, the two original owners, Phil McFarland and Ty Fujimura (who also owns Arami), parted ways amicably over Logan Square. And now, Fullerton is leaving as well.
It was announced late on Monday that McFarland had sold SmallBar Fullerton to Bob McDermott, who owns the Beer Bistro (1061 W. Madison) and will convert the Lincoln Park location to Beer Bistro North (1415 W. Fullerton). Only some cosmetic changes will happen to the space, which is closed until May 10, and McDermott will add more mass market beer brands to the craft beer list to appease the nearby DePaul college students.
McFarland decided to sell Fullerton to focus solely on the Wicker Park location, where chef Justin White and mixologist Craig Hiljus helped elevate both the food and cocktail offerings. "This is an opportunity for this team to focus its energies 100 percent on SmallBar Division so that we can continue to elevate the food, beer and cocktail programs and continue to bring stellar events to one central location,” McFarland said.
