L'Patron, a taco and burrito joint, opened Saturday at 2815 W. Diversey. The restaurant is a family affair, run by brothers Ernesto and Cesar Gonzalez. Ernesto, a Kendall alum and vet of Topolobampo, is at the kitchen's helm, creating seasonal salsas, making tortillas and grilling meats for L'Patron's burritos, tacos and gringas.

Cesar works as the restaurant's manager, while mom (a cafeteria manager with CPS) and brother Raul serve as consultants to the family-run business. "We have a family standard to uphold," Raul, who also owns a Mexican seafood restaurant in the suburbs, said. "We have to make sure we're providing high-quality food."

Raul boasts that the 16-seat counter service spot uses only fresh ingredients and
makes as much in-house as possible. Among the traditional tacos and burritos, you'll
also find hand-battered tilapia tacos with jalapenos slaw, gringas—quesadillas filled with steak or al pastor—and a rotating selection of salsas, honed from Ernesto's time as salsa cook at Topolobampo.

"We're not offering an innovative menu," Raul said. "But we are offering hearty, wholesome food. The kind of bread and beans type of meal you would get in any of our Mexican households."
