Winter in Chicago may be a good excuse to hibernate, but the Peninsula hotel has a pretty good reason to get outside and brave the cold. Opening this evening, adjacent to the Shanghai Terrace, is a new outdoor ice skating rink sitting four stories above Michigan Avenue, surrounded by pine trees and the landscape of the city. The best part? The entire entrance fee ($5 for children, $10 for adults) will be donated to the Hephzibah Children's Association and the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital.
In addition to skating, the outdoor rink will have a variety of winter beverages: hot chocolate, cider and Glühwein (German spiced wine), in addition to warm pretzels, spiced nuts and other snacks.
The rink will be open Monday through Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., Friday to Saturday from 12:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., including holidays. The rink will close for the season on March 3.
