Dishes at Gold Coast's new restaurant The Local Chicago are just like Mom used to make, but under the culinary direction of Inn at Blackberry Farm alum Travis Strickland, they've had some improvements. The highly anticipated Americana concept, operated by David Flom and Matthew Moore of white tablecloth establishment Chicago Cut Steakhouse, opened on Dec. 5.

The space in the Hilton Suites Hotel is a sleek 4,200 square-feet, filled with oak and lots of natural light. Its walls highlight display vestiges of American patriotism with massive murals of the flag and an iconic eagle statue sourced from an antique store in Wisconsin.

The 125-seat restaurant promises comfort-style dishes with a regional focus, sourcing its ingredients from Midwestern vendors like Slagel Family Farm, Local Folks Food, Crystal Valley Farms, and Marion Kay Spices. Some less pretentious brands make the menu too, like Dr. Pepper in Barbecue Baby Back Ribs and Oreo crumbs in the Mint Ice Cream Pie ("sourced direct from Kraft Foods"). Its extensive wine list is harnessed in an iPad with descriptions images, and notes on every wine. The 40-seat bar also has two exclusive beers from Two Brothers Brewing and Revolution Brewery on tap and a craft cocktail list created by bartender Dustin Drankiewicz.

The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday through Friday.
