Already known for having some of the city's best coffee, Metropolis Cafe is now stepping up its made-to-order food options. The Edgewater cafe enlisted chef Hugh Amano (Food on the Dole, Chopping Block) to develop a number of tasty-sounding food items you can order when hanging out sipping your latte.
Amano has created a menu that is as varied as having steel cut oatmeal with sour cherries, fresh berries or other seasonal fruit for breakfast to getting a Metropolis Bahn Mi (roasted pork shoulder on French loaf with Nam Prik Pao vinegar, cucumber, cilantro, jalapeno and carrot) for lunch. Breakfast will be served from 6:30 a.m. to noon and lunch will run from 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Some other items include the Ploughman's Lunch (demi baguette, chunks of cheddar cheese, cured sausage, fruit and greens); griddled English muffin with scrambled eggs, cheddar and optional Southern ham; Naan with Metropolis hummus, cucumber and roasted eggplant; and the grilled gouda and caramelized onion on rye, which can also be made into a more kid-friendly grilled cheese. The cafe will also serve chili con carne and daily fresh-made soup.
Metropolis also continues to work with local artisans like Hoosier Mama Pie Company, Gaztro-Wagon, New York Bagel & Bialy and Fritz Pastry. And with all these new food items, it's a good thing they have free Wi-Fi because it sounds like people may now spend even more time hanging out there. Warning: Don't go during Loyola finals week.
