Following the massive success of their DMK Burger Bar in Lakeview, Michael Kornick and David Morton are taking the concept on the road. The pair soft opened their second DMK location in Lombard over the weekend and will officially open the doors on Tuesday.
The new location, on the border of Oak Brook in the Fountain Square shopping center, will look nearly identical to the city spot. The restaurant will have 85 seats, but instead of all hard-backed chairs, they also installed some tufted banquettes to give the place a bit of a softer feel, Morton said.
The restaurant wil have a full bar and the same menu featuring grass-fed burgers, fresh-cut fries, shakes and more. However, it'll launch with 12 of the 14 burgers; the Big DMK and the salmon burger will appear in the near future, once the kitchen has a chance to adapt. "There's a tremendous amount of culinary that goes into DMK and it's really about doing the best job we can on the most manageable amount of menu items," Morton said.
Morton said they were excited to open in this area to give local businesses and residents something other than the large chain restaurants that dominate the dining landscape. "In general, there was an opportunity to share with that community something that's an alternative to what's out there—a small independently run restaurant," he said.
As for further expansion, Morton said they don't have any plans at the moment to open more DMKs or another FishBar, which is their small seafood-focused concept next to DMK in the city. "We're thrilled with how Lakeview is doing and are really excited about this," Morton added. "If it goes as well as we hope, we'd be excited to open more. But we're just focused on this now."
The restaurant will be open for lunch and dinner everyday, but Monday for now. Eventually, DMK will be open Mondays as well.
