If your dad is a pretty particular guy—and let's face it, what dad isn't?—then you may want to take him to lunch with Bill Kim at Belly Shack. This Sunday for Father's Day, Kim will host a special pop-up brunch between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. But don't expect anything typical.
"On Mother's Day, everyone takes out their moms, and on Father's Day, I feel like dads don't get the credit," Kim said. "My dad doesn't like to eat a lot of sweet stuff so this is a way for me to say, "This is for my dad and this is what he likes to eat: a stick-to-your-ribs kind of breakfast."
So the no reservations, first-come, first served brunch will feature five main entrees and six sides, all done a al carte ("The whole tasting menu prix fixe thing ... I'm allergic to it," Kim joked"). The menu will have things like fried chicken with cornbread and chorizo gravy; slow-roasted pork loin with tortilla casserole and salsa verde; and a breakfast burrito with crispy egg noodle and marinated tofu. Sides will include lemongrass pork sausage patties; bacon with maple syrup and pho; and yukon potato hash with chorizo. Kim will also have a lemon tapioca soft serve topped with fresh in-season strawberries. Mains will range between $8 and $12, while the sides will all be $5.
The brunch will be co-hosted by Ipsento Coffee, just be up the street. Kim has done beer and wine dinners and now wants to focus on local coffee roasters. "It'll be neat to highlight the brewers in a different format than just having coffee," he said. "It'll highlight their taste and how they brew."
And because there are so many great local roasters, Kim is planning on re-creating the pop-up brunch five or six more times, assuming things go well with this first one. Up next, he talks about doing something with Intelligentsia.
Belly Shack will revert to its regular menu at 3 p.m. on Sunday. Meanwhile, see what dad can enjoy earlier in the day.
