Welcome to Eater's latest feature, Shit People Steal, in which we ask restaurateurs what items in their restaurant have been (or are frequently) stolen.
Up first on Shit People Steal is Alinea, where one would think landing a reservation would be gift enough, but apparently people like to take souvenirs to remember their multi-course meal at the No. 6-ranked restaurant in the world. It's no secret that chef Grant Achatz likes to use a lot of fun tools to present his food, including an array of service ware created by Martin Kastner. Think they don't notice when something goes missing? Think again. Take it away, Grant:
[People take] tons of stuff. Wine glasses, napkins, silverware, Martin's service ware including cork presenters, "eyes" and anti plates, glass tubes, and the grand daddy of them all—a very, very heavy marble candle holder. It was four inches in diameter and eight inches tall. It must have been a big purse!
