Black Market Ramps?

ramps-overharvested-sm.jpgAre people getting a little too excited about the onset of spring vegetables? The annual arrival of ramps, those stinky yet delicious little green vegetables, has caused people to start foraging them to the point of serious overharvesting. Prices have skyrocketed to $12 a pound in some areas and it's gotten so out of hand in some places that Quebec has outlawed the sale of ramps since 1995. Foraging in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has been banned entirely since 2002. Will we soon see a black market for ramps? [Eater National]
