If you ever wanted to know what it was like to live through a Top Chef quickfire challenge, you may just get to find out. Stephanie Izard is holding a contest where eight lucky winners (each with a guest) will get to join Izard on a day trip to New York.
The contest, which actually launches on Monday April 4, is to promote a new direct flight on Southwest Airlines between Chicago (Midway) and Newark, N.J. People will be able to enter at the Girl & The Goat website, but can follow Izard's twitter feed this week for more information and for the official launch announcement next week.
So where does that quickfire challenge come in? Izard will prepare a snack on the flight en route to Newark where she'll have to utilize Southwest's packaged peanuts. She's going to make a peanut nuoc cham (a Vietnamese dipping sauce) with spicy peppers, shallots and malt vinegar; she'll also make beef and veggie rolls for the passengers to dip. And everyone on the flight gets the snack; not just the contest winners. "I was jealous I never got to do one on an airplane so I thought I'd hop on a Southwest flight and make people a snack," Izard said. "I'm creating my own quickfire."
While in New York, Southwest will provide lunch for Izard and the contest winners in Bryant Park, but after that, the day is wide open. "Hopefully it'll be a fun group and we can do a daytime party in New York, maybe do some bar hopping and see some fun stuff," she said.
UPDATE: Due to Southwest Airlines' recent mechanical and safety issues with some of its planes, the planned contest with Izard has been canceled. (Update on 4/5/11)
