Chef Derek Crumpton, who had plans to move back down to Florida after closing his namesake Derek's Dogs & Deli following a stint cooking with David Carrier and Andrew Brochu at Kith & Kin, was placed into a medically induced coma earlier this month. After we initially posted the tragic news, we had gotten an update that doctors had become more hopeful. Unfortunately, Crumpton is still fighting for his life, according to a source close to the family.
Crumpton has been on a ventilator at Stroger Hospital of Cook County now for 22 days. Doctors have wanted to remove him from the ventilator, but have been unsuccessful. He's still on full life support and in a coma. News we received today said that doctors want to attempt a tracheotomy but have concerns that the procedure will be too stressful on him. Crumpton's friends and family remain by his side and need your positive thoughts to help him pull through. We'll keep you updated on his status as we learn more.
