Last month we mentioned that Kanela would take over the former Orange space in Lakeview. This new "breakfast club," serving fresh and organic brunch made from scratch, is set to open its doors today, with a grand opening on Feb. 15.
We got a look inside the intimate space with its warm, inviting colors and posh decor, which includes wrap-around seating, exposed brick walls, mahogany wood tables and even a semi-private window nook.
The finished menu is full of many Greek-inspired treats, reflecting the heritage of co-owner Chris Lardakis as well as the origin of the name kanela, which means cinnamon in Greek. The menu will have seven staple sweet items and eight savory plates with rotating specials in both categories each week. Guests can opt for fresh salads, soups and sandwiches, Julius Meinl coffee and fresh-squeezed juices and smoothies. Kanela will eventually offer specialty cocktails, but is starting as a BYO.
The restaurant will also sell imported honey, jams, homemade cinnamon bread and pastries to take away. As a thank you during the first month, Kanela will offer loukoumades, a honey cinnamon donut, to each table as a complimentary dessert. So get in there soon for that tasty treat.
