At a meeting last night, members of the East Village Association voted to give consent for Bleeding Heart Bakery Cafe to build a rooftop deck at their new location in Ukrainian Village. Members of the EVA met at the Happy Village party room to discuss allowing Bleeding Heart owners to go ahead with plans to construct a deck atop their forthcoming business. The vote recommends to Ald. Joe Moreno and the City Council to approve this special-use permit.
Bleeding Heart, which will open a new cafe at 1916 W. Chicago and has two other locations in Chicago and Oak Park, hopes to use the outdoor space for warm-weather seating and the evening rooftop receptions, according to owner Michelle Garcia. The project is being built alongside Roots Handmade Pizza, a new venture from the guys behind the Fifty/50. Scott Weiner, a partner in Roots, said he couldn't rule out leasing the outdoor space from Bleeding Heart, as the properties are adjoining.
