Well it looks like the long wait and hype paid off for Grahamwich: Graham Elliot's new River North sandwichery got a ton of buzz and even more hungry people popping in to check out the intimate space on State Street.
Elliot tells us that about 500 people came through the doors on Wednesday and that they sold more than 700 sandwiches on top of whatever food they gave away as thank yous for people coming by. "I'm happy to report that not one [sandwich] came back!" Elliot said.
The grilled cheese, made with Wisconsin cheddar, shaved prosciutto, tomato marmalade and cheese curds, was the No. 1 seller. The not-easy-to-eat jibarito press (pulled pork shoulder, green mango and queso fresco on grilled crispy plantains) was the second most-ordered item and "of course, that's a pain in the dick to make," Elliot joked.
Interestingly enough, those were the two items we checked out when we popped in to shoot a video of Grahamwich on Tuesday. And we can agree that the grilled cheese was damn tasty. Now the wait is on for the new locations to open in the Loop and Wicker Park.
