The day has finally arrived: Koval Distillery will release its eagerly awaited new line of whisky, Lion's Pride, tomorrow night at a party at Delilah's. Best thing? You're invited.
The party goes from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. if you want to be among the first to taste the first legally-distilled whisky in Chicago since before prohibition. Koval, the boutique distiller known for its products like the Rose Hip Liqueur, Ginger Liqueur and vodka distilled from rye, makes all their spirits on site at their Ravenswood location. For Lion's Pride, they've created four new whiskies: Lion’s Pride Rye, Lion's Pride Oat, Lion's Pride Dark Rye and Lion's Pride Dark Oat. And we got to taste them a couple of weeks ago.
All the whiskies were aged for less than two years in new American white oak barrels from Minnesota. All four were extremely smooth and had some fruity and spice notes. None were overly smoked or peaty, but all had gorgeous natural color. The initial release will see about 150 cases hitting the Chicago market and, if you can't find it at your favorite store or pub, Koval will soon open an on-site tasting room. Last we spoke, they were awaiting permits, but hopefully they'll be open by the holidays.
If you want to attend tomorrow night's Lion's Pride tasting at Delilah's, give Koval a heads-up that you'll be there.
