Hoosier Mama, Achatz Pies Land on Bon Appetit Best Pie List

With yet another great listicle, Bon Appetit named two Chicago-related pie companies to its Top 10 Best Places for Pie list. Not a huge surprise to anyone who has had their pie (or their even-better pie shakes, which sees pie a la mode blended up and served in a cup), Chicago's Hoosier Mama Pie Co., made the cut.

Since opening in March of 2009, Hoosier Mama, started by former Trio pastry chef Paula Haney and her husband, Craig Siegelin, has taken Chicago by storm. Their pies have won the acclaim of everyone from local and national media to Graham Elliot, who selected them to sell their wares at this year's Lollapalooza.

Meanwhile, across the pond (no, not the Atlantic pond; just Lake Michigan) in the general Detroit area, Wendy and Dave Achatz (yes, cousin to one Grant Achatz) have been concocting some of the best pies in the U.S. since 1993 at their Achatz Handmade Pie Co. This writer discovered their Michigan Four Berry Pie about five years ago at Whole Foods and has never shut up about how good it is. Clearly someone agreed because the pie won top marks at the National Pie Championships. While more of their natural pies are available in Michigan (like their cream pies), Chicagoans can still pick up many of their fruit-filled pies at local Whole Foods.

Who says doughnuts are the new trend? We're sticking with pie!
