Chicago's harsh winters have stymied the popularity of brewery tasting rooms in the city, says former home brewer Mark Legenza. Legenza spent about nine years in Denver where he honed his brewing skills and drank beer at numerous rooms that took advantage of the summer weather. Legenza hopes he can start a trend here when he opens On Tour Brewing this fall at 1725 W. Hubbard St. The brewery will include a tasting room with a rolling garage door that opens up so beer lovers can enjoy a warm breeze will sipping their frosty beverage —at least during Chicago's abbreviated summer and spring times.
After success in Colorado, the native Chicagoan dreamed of returning home to open a brewery. He came home in October is working with head brewer Mark Poffenberger, formerly of Fat Head's Brewery in Portland, Ore. They're not beholden to a certain style of beer, as Legenza said they'll brew sours, pilsners, lagers, IPAs and barrel-aged beers.
"I've always had a sense of looking for an alternative," Legenza added. "I think opening a brewery represents an alternative for me."
The brewery will take up about 5,000 square feet, with about 1,500 devoted to the tasting room. They'll have 12 beers on tap with 75 seats inside. They won't serve food, but Legenza will try to work with food trucks to serve guests. On Tour's neighbors in the area will eventually include Goose Island Brewing Co., Like Minds Brewing Co. and Great Central Brewing Co. That's perfect for a quick brewery walking tour.
"And we're going to be part of that, and we're really excited about it," Legenza said.
